ABRSM has joined forces with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to celebrate Shakespeare Week with a musical twist. On 20 March two million children in 12,000 primary schools across the UK will be celebrating all things Shakespeare. We've developed a range of inspiring resources on music from Shakespeare’s time, which are either by contemporaries of Shakespeare or have been inspired by Shakespeare's works. These are available from the Shakespeare Week website and are based on six pieces from Classical 100. This is a free listening resource for primary school teachers launched by ABRSM, Classic FM and Decca Classics in 2015.  Lincoln Abbotts, Executive Director of Strategic Development, said, “We’re delighted to be working with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust for Shakespeare Week. Classical 100 is a free listening resource for primary schools and we’ve designed some practical resources to help teachers bring some of the Classical 100 pieces to life in the classroom.” Jacqueline Green, Head of Learning and Participation at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said, “We are proud to be establishing Shakespeare Week in the annual primary school calendar at a time when arts education is increasingly under pressure. This year’s theme of music has given us the chance to work with new partners and will give primary school teachers the opportunity to take Shakespeare into their classrooms and, with their children, discover Shakespeare in new, intriguing and fun ways.” classical_100_preview_event One of the other musical highlights of Shakespeare Week 2017 will be the Big Shakespeare Assembly, featuring a brand new song - Shakespeare Rocks! - especially composed by Steve Titford on behalf of school musical experts, Musicline Direct. The music theme continues throughout the week with a Composition Competition in partnership with Birmingham Conservatoire.
